Introduction

Two activities that have long interested me are philosophy and photography. The further I have studied and practiced philosophy the more it has influenced and helped my approach to photography, and vice versa. The two interests are synergistic in their effect and employ a common element.  Light.

Philosophy is defined as the love of wisdom and photography can be described as writing or painting with light; the common element being light.

For photography, light can be defined as the medium of visual perception, the natural agent or influence which evokes the activity of the eye.

For philosophy, other definitions of light are more suited. Light illuminates spiritually or intellectually and is used with reference to mental illumination or elucidation possessed by the mind, a gleam or sparkle in the  eye, or the light of knowledge.

The most magical quality of light is that it is invisible.

The light of creation, sunlight and man made light, become evident only when they are reflected or refracted by some object in creation, revealing objects to the eyes.  The light of the mind becomes evident only when the mind is reflective, revealing knowledge to the mind. In the Vedic teaching the element of fire is defined as including the qualities of light and form, or the shape of objects we see, which further underlines the similarity between these two subjects.

My hope is that the pages of this web site will facilitate a greater awarensss of light; the light of the mind and the light of creation.
